European Central Bank (ECB)

General Description

The European Central Bank is responsible for both monetary policy and banking supervision in the euro area. The supervisory and the monetary policy arms of the ECB are independent from each other, and they both work in close cooperation with national authorities in the EU, forming the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) on the one hand and the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) on the other.
